How to Choose the Right House Number Size and Style

Your house number is the first thing a delivery driver, visitor or emergency responder sees when they arrive — and on a lot of Cape Town streets, it's the difference between finding you first time or driving past twice. Here's how to pick the right one.

Start with visibility, not just style

If your entrance is set back from the road, or your street is wide and fast-moving, go bigger. Our standard 300 x 450mm signs read comfortably from a driveway or short front garden. For estates, double-storey homes or long walls where the number needs to be seen from the street, step up to the 900mm Large sign — it's built specifically for that kind of distance.

Horizontal or vertical?

This comes down to your wall, not personal taste. A horizontal sign suits a low garden wall, pillar or gate. A vertical sign works better mounted beside a front door or on a narrow pillar where a wide sign wouldn't fit. Both are laser-cut to your exact number, name and colour choice.

Flat, powder-coated, or 3D?

A flat-cut aluminium sign is the classic, minimal option and the most affordable place to start. If you want more colour and a slightly heavier finish, our powder-coated range holds its colour well against coastal sun. For a genuinely architectural look, the Hoeki 3D Corner sign wraps around a corner or pillar for a shadow-lined, dimensional effect, and the Boxi gives you a boxed, raised plaque that lifts your number off the wall entirely.

Flush-mount or stand-off?

Flush-mounted signs sit directly against the wall — clean and low-profile. Stand-off fixings hold the sign 13mm off the wall, casting a subtle shadow that reads as a more premium, architectural finish. It's a small upgrade that makes a noticeable difference in photos and at night under downlighting. You can add a set of stand-off fixings to any sign in the range.

Why aluminium over steel or plastic

Cape Town's combination of strong UV and salt air is hard on anything painted or plastic — expect fading and rust within a season or two. Every Komposite sign is laser-cut from rust-proof aluminium composite at our Cape Town workshop, so it holds its finish for years, not months.
