Getting the size wrong on an AC cover is a common (and avoidable) mistake — too small and it won't fit over the unit, too large and it looks bulky and doesn't seal against wind-driven rain properly. That's why having a proper AC cover sizing guide is essential. In this article, we'll show you how to measure your outdoor unit correctly in under five minutes.
What to measure
To ensure the right fit, you need three key measurements: the width, depth, and height of your outdoor condenser unit. Make sure to include any brackets or piping that protrude from the main body of the unit. Measure the widest, deepest, and tallest points — not just the casing.
- Width: Measure the unit at its widest point, left to right.
- Depth: Measure from front to back, including any brackets or pipework.
- Height: Measure from the base to the highest point, including any raised vents or fan housing.
After taking these measurements, it’s important to add roughly 100–150mm to each dimension. This added clearance is vital, as the cover needs some airspace around the unit to allow for efficient airflow once it's covered. A tight fit can choke the airflow the unit needs to operate effectively.

Don't forget airflow clearance
Every Komposite cover uses an engineered vent design to ensure the outdoor unit can effectively draw and expel air when covered. However, this efficiency only works if there's enough space within the cover for air to circulate. If you're unsure, it's always safer to choose a larger size rather than a smaller one.
